Verdian promotes an ambitious and innovative project in the heart of Sicily that combines renewable energy, agricultural redevelopment and cultural enhancement of the area
From a late 19th century tragedy to a rebirth project. This is the path we want to characterise the Gessolungo mine, in Caltanissetta, known for the serious accidents that caused the death of numerous ‘carusi’, children forced to work in extremely harsh conditions.
Today, we are proud to announce that there is a project we have promoted that can bring a symbolic place back to life through the production of renewable energy, the redevelopment of the area from an agricultural point of view, and the preservation of historical memory.
The project was presented during the recent workshop ‘Flowers of Sulphur’, held in Caltanissetta, by promoters Stefania Amato of Consulting srl, who moderated the meeting, together with our Gianluca di Castri.
Also present at the conference were Technical Director Gianfranco Caudullo and technicians Ignazio Musumeci and Giulio Testa, as well as Nissian actor Liborio Natali, who read some poems by Ignazio Buttitta. The mayor of Caltanissetta Walter Tesauro and Regional Deputy Michele Mancuso also participated in support of the project.
The ‘Gessolungo Project’ specifically envisages the installation of photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 72 MW, storage systems and, in collaboration with the Universities of Catania and Palermo, the development of a cultivation path with the aim of restoring soil fertility during the life cycle of the plant.
Finally, a cycling route will be created that will include the recovery and rehabilitation of the old rural school and the ‘Cimitero dei Carusi’, paying homage to the history of the place and the victims of the mine.
